About CAT

The CAT exam is the common entrance exam of MBA, which is conducted to gain admission to 13 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and most of the top B-schools every year. Among all the management exams, the Common Admission Test (CAT) is considered to be one of the toughest nuts to crack.

The first step to attain the dream of pursuing MBA is to take the MBA entrance exams conducted by the various institutes of India. CAT or the Common Admission Test is taken by over two lakh MBA aspirants every year. Earlier CAT exam was held every year on the third Sunday of November in a paper pencil format. Since 2009 it has been changed to computer based test. There are two sections. One section focuses on Quantitative Aptitude + Data Interpretation and other section focuses on Verbal Ability + Logical Reasoning.

CAT Exam Pattern for 2016:

CAT 2016 Duration:

  • Test duration will be of 180 minutes.
  • Each section has a time limit of 60 minutes. You are not allowed to switch between sections at any point.
  • An on-screen timer is available for you to check how much time you have left.

Types of Questions

MCQ Section

For objective multiple-choice questions, every question has 4 options – A, B, C and D. Read the question on the screen and click on the circle next to your selected answer.

Direct Answer Type

Some questions in each section may not be of multiple choice type. Answers are to be directly typed onto the screen.

Calculator allowed.

Students will be provided with on-screen calculators.

CAT 2015 paper also comprised of the Non-MCQ questions. The answer to the non – MCQs was to be given by typing through the keyboard on the provided space.
Candidates were not allowed to switch between sections.
Candidates did not have the liberty to attempt any of the sections first. They had to answer the sections in a pre-specified order,as per the officials, which was same for all the candidates.
The number of non-MCQs in each section was different.
